01 Jul Kiwi on Queen – 421 Queen Street – Building Profile
Kiwi on Queen was developed by The Gray Group of Companies and designed by the acclaimed architects Peddle Thorp & Aitken.
Peddle Thorp & Aitken intensively designed the building facade in a pleasingly presented composite aluminum paneling to ensure that the panel jointing did not reply on sealants for long-term weather-tightness. The design layout was refined a number of times during the early marketing phase to suit the changing demand from students, short stay tenants and longer term family requirements.
The Kiwi on Queen Apartment block consists of 10 floors with 151 apartments, retail on the ground floor and basement parking. The building is a steel structure with concrete traydeck floors and in-situ shear walls. The exterior cladding system was changed to Aluminum Composite panels giving improved weather tightness and a smarter look. The panels were installed by crane eliminating the need for scaffolding and thereby allowing cost savings to be put into the superior cladding system.
Traffic management was a significant issue being in the CBD with the council restricting deliveries until after 9am and limited site access. The project had a tight time frame and overcame all challenges and restrictions to be completed on time.
